The latest data from the International Renewable Energy Agency’s Renewable Capacity Statistics 2024 report reveals a positive picture of uptake over the last 5 years:
- Share of renewable energy in electricity capacity up 8.6% in 2019 to 43% in 2024
- Capacity of renewable energy projects up by 52% to 3,869 GW in the last 5 years.
Solar energy leads the transition:
- Solar power capacity up 138.5% to 1,419 GW
- Wind power capacity up 63.5% to 1,017 GW
- Hydroelectric power plants up by 6.4% to 1,268 GW
- Geothermal power plants up by 7.1% to 15GW
- Biomass power plants capacity up by 20% in 2019 to 150 GW in 2023
- Marine energy (waves, tides and sea winds) up by 0.2% to 527 MW. Half of these are located in Asia, and 45% are in Europe.
Renewable capacity growth by continent:
- Asia: 74%
- Oceania: 56%
- Europe: 37%
- North America: 36%
- South America: 29%
- Africa: 23%.
