Denmark commits to decarbonising shipping

Every five minutes, a Danish-operated ship docks at a port somewhere in the world. Denmark is leading efforts to achieve climate-neutral shipping by 2050, as part of its zero carbon goal for that year.

Shipping contributes almost 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions, and with maritime trade volumes expected to triple by 2050, Denmark recognizes the need for ambitious action. The country, with a strong shipping heritage, aims to overcome regulatory, financial, technological, and political challenges to support a green transition. A recent publication launched at COP28 highlights Denmark’s collaboration between authorities and shipping companies to accelerate the decarbonisation of global shipping. The publication explores insights and examples from Denmark’s initiatives, including offshore wind energy, carbon capture and storage, and energy efficiency, emphasizing the pursuit of commercially viable solutions for climate-neutral shipping while ensuring a just transition.
