A staggering one-third of all the food we produce goes to waste. In the UK and the EU alone, a staggering 40% of this wastage happens right at the final retail and consumer stages. This inefficiency is a glaring issue in our global food system, and the need for action is pressing.
Enter Positive Carbon, a game-changer in the fight against food waste. The company has just secured a significant €2.3 million in seed funding, led by Business Venture Partners, with participation from Heartfelt_, Gateway Ventures, and Enterprise Ireland. Positive Carbon is on a mission to transform how we manage food waste, and their innovative, patented food waste sensors are at the forefront of this revolution.
Founded in 2020, Positive Carbon’s technology has already been making waves across multiple sites, delivering remarkable results. Implementing Positive Carbon’s system has resulted in an impressive 50% reduction in food waste, diverting over 4,000 tonnes of potential waste from ending up in landfills. This success is a testament to the effectiveness of Positive Carbon’s mission.
Mark Kirwan, Positive Carbon CEO, says “Our technology is not just a tool for reducing food waste; it’s the driving force behind fostering a sustainable ecosystem that benefits businesses, the environment, and society at large,” says Kirwan. The recent funding is seen as a significant step in accelerating their relentless pursuit to eradicate food waste.

Andrew McGreal, Investment Director at BVP, highlights Positive Carbon’s unique impact on both customer margins and the environment. “Positive Carbon stands out for the rapid, tangible impact their solution has both on customers’ margins as well as the environment. Food waste is a global critical issue, Positive Carbon isn’t just solving part of the problem, it is helping set new standards in terms of how corporates and commercial kitchens operate”, notes McGreal.
The fresh injection of capital will be directed toward research and development, amplifying marketing efforts, and expanding operations across the UK and EU. “We’re not just talking about change; we’re driving it,” emphasizes Mark Kirwan. Positive Carbon’s vision goes beyond reducing food waste – it’s about setting a new standard for how we approach this critical issue, creating a ripple effect that benefits businesses, the environment, and society as a whole.
