Denmark climate program finds nation is getting further from not closer to 2025 climate goal

In the past year, Denmark has encountered challenges in achieving its 2025 climate target, as revealed by the government’s latest climate program. The initial assessment stated that emissions needed to be reduced by 0.4-3.2 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents to meet the goal. However, the updated estimate now indicates that measures requiring reductions of 0.5-3.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents, including gases like methane, are necessary.

Various factors have contributed to this increased challenge, including a delay in the expected payoff from investments in underground CO2 storage. Denmark aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50-54 percent compared to 1990 levels by 2025. The government now projects that emissions could be 49.3 percent lower in 2025, with further negotiations ongoing.

One approach to reach the target involves increasing the use of biofuels in vehicles, although this proposal has faced criticism from experts and politicians. Despite the challenges, the government remains determined to address these issues and make necessary adjustments to achieve its climate goals.
