Germans are practically finding renewable energy solutions in their doorsteps, generating electricity from their balconies.
In the first half of 2023, the number of plug-in balcony solar power systems registered with the German Federal Network Agency more than doubled.
While the German government is working on Solar Package 1 to reduce bureaucratic obstacles, some states and municipalities are offering financial support to encourage citizens to install balcony solar systems.
States provide subsidies of up to €500 (£450) towards half of the cost of purchasing a solar system. Those who secure this funding can save half or more of the costs for a balcony solar power system.
According to the Consumer Center of North Rhine-Westphalia, a plug-in solar system with a 400W module currently costs €350-€600 (£300-£500) and 800W systems around €1000 (up to £900).
