Recent EU draft legislation proposes introducing a new vehicle category that from 2035, must be designed to take CO2-neutral E-fuel from point of manufacture.
This would be achievable through devices monitoring the chemical properties of the fuel.
However, the interest group ‘eFuel Alliance’ criticized the proposal as overly restrictive and practically unworkable. ‘This maintains the ban on internal combustion engines in 2035,’ stated the association, which includes E-fuel manufacturers as well as companies from the automotive and petroleum industries.
In the European Union (EU), starting from 2035, only carbon-free new cars are supposed to be allowed, essentially signifying a ban on combustion engines. Germany, on the initiative of Minister of Transport Volker Wissing (FDP), secured an exception allowing cars with internal combustion engines to continue running on E-fuels.
