Denmark’s energy technology exports increase

Danish exports of energy technology increased to 106.1 Bn kroner (£12.3Bn), according to a report by DI Energy, Green Power Denmark, Danish District Heating, and the Danish Energy Agency. Unfortunately, however, the export of wind energy technology declined in 2022.

The recent shift from gas and oil, as well as increased demand for energy efficiency, had a significantly positive effect on the export of both bioenergy and district heating technology, reaching record levels. The export of district heating technology increased by 8.9% compared to the previous year. Bioenergy technology reached a total export value of 10.6 billion kroner (£1.23 Bn) last year. In terms of purpose, energy-saving products accounted for the largest share of sales in 2022, comprising 39% of the total export, followed by technology for energy production, accounting for 32%.

Previously, the United Kingdom had been the largest export market for Danish energy technology, but Germany surpassed the UK in 2022. The ten largest importers of Danish energy technology collectively receive 62% of the exports. This indicates that certain markets are crucial for Denmark while also highlighting that the export of energy technology is not limited to a few countries.

For the first time since the UK’s withdrawal from the EU, exports of energy technology to EU countries exceeded exports to countries outside the EU. Within the EU, exports increased by a significant 17.7% compared to 2021, largely due to an increase in exports to France by 55%. The fact that exports within the EU now constitute the largest share of the total export is also attributed to a 16.5% decrease in exports outside the EU. For example, the export of wind energy technology to the UK has declined.
